Lapland – The Magnetic Storm

Overview

6-day expedition to Kilpisjärvi, a village at the northwestern tip of Finland ringed by fells and sitting directly under the auroral oval, timed to the March equinox when geomagnetic storm activity peaks. Days are built around real space-weather forecasting: reading solar wind data, Kp-index forecasts, and magnetometer readings each afternoon to decide where and when to position for the night's activity, then moving by snowmobile-supported convoy to the clearest vantage point, often the slopes of Saana fell. The group works alongside Elina Räisänen, an aurora forecaster and geophysicist who has monitored geomagnetic storm activity across Finnish Lapland for over a decade, learning to distinguish a minor substorm from the kind of major geomagnetic event that turns the whole sky green and red. Days off-shift are spent snowshoeing the fells and visiting the regional geophysical observatory.
